Avery’s work is the meeting point of the bold composition of Abstract Expressionism and the color sensitivities of Henri Matisse, a mixture that showcases the artist’s explosive power as well as his exquisite subtlety.  Using thin veils of pigment, the painter balanced broad fields of carefully balanced color.  Although he never abandoned figuration, Milton Avery is often grouped with the New York School of painting for his fields of color and Rothko-like application of paint.  He worked prolifically in both oil and watercolor.
